Epilepsy
What is it?
According to the definition of the World Health Organization (WHO), epileptic seizure, also known as epilepsy, is a chronic disorder of the brain function of various origins. It is characterized by recurrent seizures that result from abnormal bioelectric discharges in the brain.
Epilepsy is the most common neurological disease – it affects about 50 million people (1% of the population). In Poland, we have about 300 thousand sufferers and about 27 thousand new cases every year.
Epilepsy is not a mental illness.

- Do not move a person during an epileptic seizure
- Do not try to "revive", do not pat on the face
- Do not lift the person's head
- Do not try to open someone’s jaws if they are clamped together
- Do not put any objects in the person’s mouth
- Do not try to stop the convulsions and do not restrain your movements
- Do not use artificial respiration
- Do not give them anything to eat or drink until they are fully recovered
- After the seizure a person may not be fully aware and behave inadequately to the situation. Do not attempt to force them to do anything.
